Horse Training
Groundwork is very important and a lot of time is spent on it. Most issues can be worked out on the ground prior to even stepping foot in the stirrup. The first few rides we are just developing a "Go" and not working on direction. Once we have a go then we start to add in control, always keeping in mind that all horses learn from the release of pressure, not the pressure itself. As soon as they're ready we get out of the round pen.

Mule Training
The sacking out and desensitizing process is the same as it is with the horses, however we do less lunging with the mules as they seem to get bored rather quickly with going in circles. Ground driving is an important tool to use as a building block in preparation towards a well broke mule. Once the basics are in place for a safe ride we get out of the round pen. You can not ride anything out of a mule, they need their time to think their way through every issue. Letting them know that they are allowed to think helps them stay calm in unknown situations.
